Lionel Messi was back in the starting line-up for the first time this calendar year at PSG. The Argentinian suffered from the aftermath of a corona infection, but has since recovered. Justin Kluivert appeared at the kick-off at Nice. Simons started on the bench at PSG and was later allowed to come in. Pablo Rosario and Calvin Stengs were not present at all in the Parc des Princes.
Not much spectacular happened in regular time. PSG mainly had the ball and Nice stopped almost the entire game. The visitors succeeded in that too: after ninety minutes, the glasses position was still on the scoreboard. As a result, an extension had to be made, but that did not provide a definitive answer: it remained 0-0.
Ultimately, a penalty shootout had to ensure that PSG or Nice could advance to the quarterfinals of the French Cup. Messi and Kylian Mbappe hit the first PSG penalties, but Leandro Paredes missed after that. Nice then also missed, so that it was still tied after ten penalties. At the sixth penalty, however, things went wrong for PSG and Simons: the youth international of Orange started, but encountered goalkeeper Marcin Bułka.
The experienced Dante managed to use his penalty, which means that PSG is already out of the French cup. In any case, the star team can no longer win the treble this season due to Simons' miss. Nice advances to the quarterfinals.
