Born into a family of musicians in Milan , Italy on this day in 1939, Giorgio Gaberscik first developed a love of music while playing the guitar as therapy for a hand injury. Later he learned to sing and, in his early twenties, Gaber co-produced the first Italian rock 'n' roll song  -  Ciao ti dirò  (“Ciao, ti dire”). During the 1960s, Gaber mainly performed on television, where his intentional and entertaining songwriting enraptured audiences by intelligently interacting with Milan 's changing cultural landscape .

In 1969 he published  How beautiful the city is   (How beautiful the city is), which remains among his best-known works for his attention to contemporary social concerns. To establish a more personal connection with the audience, Gaber moved almost exclusively to the theater in 1970. His emotional and complex theatrical performances examined Italian society and encouraged an introspective national dialogue .

Gaber's successes

Over the next 30 years, Gaber perfected the medium of song theater with hundreds of performances a year. This monumental work demonstrated that music, monologues and comedy were tools for expanding one's emotional limits by reflecting on shared national realities. In honor of Gaber's contribution, in 2003 a historic Milanese opera house was reopened with its name of  Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber.
